Frequently Asked Questions

Animal-free dairy is dairy made without any animal inputs. Translation? Nomoo is dairy milk without the cow! We’ve partnered with Perfect Day, who make a revolutionary non-animal whey protein that is identical to what you would find in cow's milk — except without the cow. That means you can finally enjoy the taste, texture, and nutrition profile of milk without the cruelty, or the carbon footprint, of Big Dairy. And just in case it wasn’t clear, Nomoo is vegan!
Dairy production generates a ton of methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas that is contributing heavily to climate change. Meanwhile, plant-based milk production (think: almonds and oats) often demands a lot of water, a precious resource we can no longer afford to waste. At Nomoo, we bring science and nature together to make animal-free dairy that uses minimal water, land, and energy. How big a deal is this? Well, if all dairu was made like ours, the emissions reduction would equate to removing 53 million passengers vehicles from the road each year.
Yes! Nomoo is lactose free by design! Since our non-animal free whey protein is produced through fermentation (instead of cows) we get to choose which sugar to use to turn it into dairy products. Most plant-based dairy alternatives use sucrose, or cane sugar, which isn’t great for your body. We’ve chosen allulose, a rare sugar found in figs, raisins, and jackfruit that has almost no calories and zero glycemic index, all while tasting virtually indistinguishable from regular sugars.
Short answer? No! While Nomoo is animal-free, lactose free, hormone free, and cruelty free, it is not dairy free. The non-animal whey protein we use is molecularly identical to the whey protein found in traditional cow’s milk. So, if you have a milk protein allergy, we recommend avoiding Nomoo products, just as you would any other conventional dairy product.
First things first, Nomoo does not contain any GMOs. Our friends at Perfect Day make non-animal whey protein from microflora, similar to the way beer or kombucha is made. Microflora are basically microscopic factories, able to produce many of the vitamins and nutrients we need to thrive. Since they don’t naturally make cow milk proteins on their own, we’ve given them a genetic “recipe” to teach them how to do it. So while Nomoo milk itself contains zero GMOs, it is also not considered non-GMO.
In order to keep our prices as low as possible for you, we only sell Nomoo right here through this website. As we grow and expand, we hope to bring our products to grocery stores all over the country, and eventually the world. For now, though, we prefer to ship directly to our customers!
Nomoo products are ultra-filtered and asceptic, which means they are shelf stable at room temperature for up 120 days. That means we are able to ship them without the need for energy-intensive refrigeration. It also means you can store your backups in your pantry for a good while. We recommend chilling Nomoo products before you consume them, and once you open the packaging, you should refrigerate and consume it within 7 days, like you would any open food or beverage!
No one person or company can solve the climate crisis on their own. However, we believe individual actions add up, especially in places like the United States, which has contributed 25% of the world’s historic carbon emissions, and continues to be one of the planet’s top emitters today. By making the conscious choice to consume more climate friendly products, while also advocating for radical system change, we can tip the scales against Big Dairy (and Big Meat and Big Oil) once and for all!
